More about working with
feral cats!

We believe in indoor living for cats. A good article on WHY can be found here.

We can’t overstate the importance of spaying or neutering cats – whether they are lap cats or ferals. An unspayed female cat can have 2–3 litters, or four to 24 kittens, per year. A single pair of cats and their kittens can produce as many as 420,000 kittens in just 7 years! In the wild, more kittens mean more suffering and starvation, and of course kittens are easy prey for predators. This article gives all the other reasons why it’s important and dispels many of the myths.

That said, many people choose to take care of stray cats who are not suitable for indoor living. (Perhaps because they are fearful and don’t want to be touched, or are hostile to existing pets.) In this case, we recommend that these cats first be trapped and sterilized, and then provided shelter so that their lives are less harsh in inclement weather. These shelters can be bought or constructed from scratch.

The importance of working with the community on trapping and fixing can be found in this excellent article here.

The ABCs of trapping can be found here. Coastside Feral Care has traps that we are happy to lend, and we can walk you through the process.
